Al-Masāq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean is a peer reviewed, international journal covering all aspects of Mediterranean societies and cultures from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries CE. As the journal of the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, it aims to foster cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary investigation, encouraging debate on the intercommunal and transregional crosspollination within the Medieval Mediterranean, and promoting innovatory research. Its thematic scope is broad, including the dissemination and exchange of culture in the Mediterranean, Islamic imagery in art, Islam in medieval European literature, Islam in art and architecture, material culture, navigation and coastal communities, archaeology, urban and rural settlements, biographies of saints, women in literature and society, the Crusades, gender issues in the Mediterranean, Islam in Spain and Sicily, Norman Sicily and Islam, Byzantium and Islam, Eastern Orthodoxy, art and imagery: icons and paintings, monastic and religious life, government and war, medicine, science and technology, military history, national identity concepts in the Mediterranean, geography and settlement research, historical writing, archives and resources, language and literature: Latin, Greek, Arabic, etc.
